We open our newsletter this week with a prayer to St Joseph, the Patron Saint of our school.

While St Joseph's Feast Day occurs on Saturday 18th March we will celebrate this day this Friday 17th March with our friends from St Joseph's School Danniverke.
|

Whānau are welcome to join us for Mass at 11:00 AM, Specific details of the day follows in this newsletter.

This week we welcomed Mia Hawkins and her whānau to our school and into Room 1. Mia joins us from St Anne’s in Auckland. She is joined by her mum Tiquila and dad Matthew. Nau mai haere mai whānau.

LEADING IN FAITH, LEARNING OR LIFE

A’Deane’s Bush Scenic Reserve
|
|
Last Friday our Year 6,7 & 8 students joined Marian, John, Jane, Whaea Ngatel, and Mrs. Jackson at A’Deane Bush for an education outside of the classroom experience. Our tamariki learned how to erect a bivouac, cross a stream safely, and most importantly how to have ‘safe fun’ while out in the bush. The smiles on their faces when they returned and their comments tell me that they absolutely loved their day.

Did you know that our tamariki worked really well at Tech to complete their ‘Waka Huia’ treasure boxes. Tech Teacher: Ranier Davie commented that the students made the most of their time, were busy and super productive.
|

Last week our tamariki made ‘the most delicious’ Muesli Bars’.
|
|
|
|
|

As part of their program about ‘Kaitiakitanga’ our Year 5&6’s have been working with Whaea Sarah and Miss. Notezli to reflect, review and renew their thinking about how they can be stewards for our environment. The following understandings are being discussed: Helping the environment, sharing the fruits of the Holy Spirit, shared responsibility, a real sense of community, taking care, showing empathy. Thank you Aunty Aly for coming in and inspiring us with your korero.

We are excited to welcome tamariki and kaiako from St Joseph's School Dannevirke to celebrate St Joseph's Day with us this week, Friday 17th March. Whānau are welcome to join us for Mass.

Our school uniform is a statement of belonging to a St Joseph’s Catholic School, Waipukurau. All pupils are required to wear the correct uniform. We will continue to remind our tamariki of the importance of wearing the correct uniform and would appreciate your help in making sure the following school uniform accessories is adhered to.

Last Friday our Board of Trustees shared a notice with our community that our school will be CLOSED for INSTRUCTION tomorrow - Thursday 16th March.

On behalf of all our students and teachers, we would like to say a huge THANK YOU! To our newly elected PFG leaders: Sarah Tate: Cooper's mum (Chairperson), Jen Hobson: Henry’s mum (Secretary), Lee Ann Ayto: Emily and Finn's mum (Treasurer) and their committee members: All parents/guardians at St Joseph's School. At their meeting this week they have allocated $400 per classroom for teachers to use towards resources/experiences that enhance their classroom programs - Kia Ora mō tō awhinatia kia matou.

I would like to extend my gratitude to the work our Board of Trustees are doing to ensure the governance of our school is reflected in the manner in which they are being ‘Kaitiaki/Stewards’ of our school. In line with our school values, our BoT members have taken responsibility for portfolios including Finance, Property, Curriculum, Enrolment/Staffing, and Policy. Our next meeting is on Monday 20th March at 5:30 PM in Room 2. Nau mai haere mai.

MESSAGE FROM OUR SCHOOL LEADERS

|
This week on Friday we will be hosting St Joseph's School from Dannevirke to celebrate St Joseph’s Day. They will be at our school for most of the day.
|
|
This Tuesday Room 5 are doing a day camp where they light fires and set up camp. Hopefully they have been having a lot of fun with their activities throughout the day.
|

A reminder to Year 7 and 8’s to work on your passion project and community projects and to put it into the William Pike programme.
|

Last week on Friday the Year 6, 7 and 8 went on a trip to A’Deane’s Scenic Bush Reserve for their outdoor William Pike activity. Students cooked sausages, made bivouacs, did some bushwalking and went river crossing.
|
We hope everybody enjoyed their fun trip to A’Deane’s bush.

In New Zealand it can be easy to take access to fresh water for granted – in low-lying countries such as Kiribati a lack of rivers or streams and vulnerability to salt-water ingress mean life-giving water is increasingly becoming scarce, and healthy, nutritious food too expensive for families to afford. Through the Kiribati Health Champions Programme our Kiribati partner, Teitoingainga, works to reduce poor nutrition by teaching and mentoring on how to access and cook more-commonly available local produce. This work is helping to offset the rise of non-communicable diseases such as heart and lung conditions and diabetes and also restore traditional knowledge lost through modernisation and the importing of cheap, low calorific value food into the country.

Our AGM meeting was held on Monday night and we had the following people elected as officers:

A big warm welcome to our new members who have joined the PFG. We are always looking for new members so please don’t hesitate to talk to one of us about what is involved or please come along to one of our meetings to see what we do. Our next meeting is Monday 3 April at 7pm. This will only be a short meeting to finalise details for the working bee before the school holidays.

Are back up and running!! Order forms will be sent home with the children in the next week or so. Unfortunately the prices have increased slightly (like most things) and we don’t have croissants this time but we all know how delicious the cookies are.

CHB Junior Football
Registration link: https://www.sporty.co.nz/chbjuniorfootball/registrations-1. Parents of children who registered with CHB Junior Football in 2022 will have received an email asking them to re-register their child for 2023.
We have our regular Saturday morning offering and also our Intercity competition again this year.
Those students who would like to play competitively, across Hawke's Bay, can enter their names for consideration for our Intercity team(s). Students must be Year 6+. The cost for the season for these students is $40. This is due to increased costs from Central Football for these teams. Parents should expect to travel to Napier and Hastings at least 50% of the time for games. Practice will take place during the week at Russell Park.
